Workplace pensions mostly come in two designs: defined contribution and defined benefit. They answer a different question.
A defined contribution pension defines what goes in: contributions build a personal pot that is invested. A defined benefit pension defines what comes out: a promised income based on your salary and years of service. Some people have both kinds from different jobs.
