When you leave a job, contributions from you and your employer stop, but everything already paid in remains yours, including all of the employer contributions.

In a defined contribution scheme the pot stays invested and can keep growing. In a defined benefit scheme the income you built up is preserved and usually increases with inflation until you take it.
